You’re not the only one who gets hungry. When plants, algae, and certain bacteria need food, they can’t see what’s in the fridge or pop over to the nearest market. Instead, plants make their own food through a process called photosynthesis. The word “photosynthesis” can be broken down into two smaller words: “photo”, which means light, and “synthesis”, which means putting together. Plants use the energy from sunlight to make their own food source — and fun fact, this makes them autotrophs, organisms that are self-feeding.
Autotrophs need ingredients to create food the same way you need ingredients to make a meal. Plants use carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O), and sunlight to make a carbohydrate known as glucose (C6H12O6), which is a form of sugar they need to survive. How does it work? First, a plant will draw water and minerals from the ground through its roots. The water passes through the vessels in the stem and travels to the leaves. Second, the leaves take in carbon dioxide from the air through pores called stomata. Third, the plant will take in light energy from the sun through chloroplasts, an organelle found only in plants. Organelles in cells act like organs in your body and each carry out a specific function. Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll, a green chemical that gives leaves their green color and allows the plants to absorb energy from light. As a result, a chemical reaction begins that breaks down carbon dioxide and water, in order to produce glucose and oxygen (O2).
If we were to write the formula for photosynthesis, it would look like this:
6CO2 + 6H2O + Light energy → C6H12O6 (glucose) + 6O2
So, what happens with that glucose and oxygen? The energy from the glucose can be used for growth, development, and repair. The rest of the glucose is stored in leaves, roots, or even fruits for later use. As for the oxygen, it’s what you’re breathing right now as you read this. And finally, how does the plant “eat” the food it produces?
